Starting June 28, 2025, digital accessibility is mandatory for every company website and e-shop. Law 4994/2022, which implements the European Directive (EU) 2019/882, sets specific criteria so all digital services can be used equally by every user.
Non-compliance brings fines. It can also lead to lost partnerships and bad publicity.
Who it applies to
This requirement currently applies to businesses with more than 10 employees or an annual turnover over 2 million euros, as well as those providing services to public sector entities.Smaller businesses are currently exempt. Still, compliance is a clear sign of seriousness and professionalism.
*While the law doesn't explicitly name a compliance standard, the requirements described are close to WCAG 2.1, Level AA. In practice, this means:
- Alt text on all images.
- Subtitles on videos and multimedia.
- Adequate color contrast.
- Clear heading hierarchy and content structure.
- Keyboard navigation without a mouse.
- Screen reader compatibility.
- Accessibility statement published on your website.
*Consult a lawyer to make sure your business is fully covered.
Compliance is a strategic advantage
Bigger audience: 100 million people in the EU live with some form of disability.
Better SEO: Accessibility techniques also help search engines.
Stronger brand: You show respect, social responsibility and professionalism.
