Google Shopping Ads launched in Greece in summer 2019. They'd already worked well in plenty of other markets. They're a type of Google Ads campaign that surfaces products in search results with a title, photo, price and store name. So when someone searches for a product, they see Shopping Ads in a dedicated area alongside organic results and text ads.

What's the structure of the ad?

The format of Shopping Ads is, as the image shows, simple and substantive. At a glance, without the user clicking, product ads display:

  • Product photo, at least 800×800px, on a white background and without overlays
  • Product title up to 150 characters, of which the first 70 are shown
  • Selling price
  • Store name
  • And some additional information

Where do Shopping Ads appear?

They can appear:

  • In Google search results, above or to the right of text ads, and on the dedicated Shopping tab with filtering features
  • On Google search partner sites (including YouTube)

Shopping Ads can appear at the same time as text ads from the same advertising account on the search results page.

How do we set up Shopping Ads campaigns?

The process has two steps. The first is uploading the products with all their information (the feed). Google built the Merchant Center for this. It's the intermediate platform where we upload the product list with all the information and photos pulled from the advertiser's e-shop. With simple rules we can then organise and group products in Merchant Center to feed the right Google Shopping Ads campaigns.

In the second step we create the Google Shopping Ads campaigns inside the Google Ads account. Campaigns contain ad groups, and ad groups can contain product ads or product groupings. A key difference is the absence of keywords. Shopping Ads are triggered based on the relevance of the titles, descriptions and attributes of the advertised products. We can however set negative keywords at the campaign, ad group or product-grouping level.
